Obituary of Elizabeth Louise Brown

Elizabeth Louise Brown (Betty), 97, of Glenns Ferry, Idaho died at her home on Monday, March 4, 2024, with her family at her side. Betty and her twin brother, Bill, were born on February 25, 1927, to Percy and Marian Varin in Gooding, Idaho.

Betty graduated from Gooding High School in 1946. She attended Southern Idaho College of Education in Albion, Idaho from 1946 to 1948 and graduated with a teaching certificate. She taught school in a small country school north of Bliss, called Clover Creek from 1948 to 1949.

Betty met her future husband, Gordon Brown, from Paul, Idaho, while attending school in Albion. They were married on May 26, 1949, and lived in Paul during the summer of 1949 before moving to Rupert, Idaho in the Fall of that year. Betty taught fourth grade in Rupert while Gordon commuted to Albion to finish the last semester of his Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Gordon and Betty moved to Glenns Ferry, Idaho in the Fall of 1950. Through extension courses, summer school, and correspondence courses, Betty received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. She taught second grade and kindergarten in Glenns Ferry. She loved teaching. She loved her students, and they loved her.

Betty retired from teaching in 1985. After 35 years of teaching, Betty and Gordon became Snowbirds and spent the next 12 winters in Yuma, Arizona, living in their motor home. They also toured the United States and visited London and Paris, making the most out of retirement.

In 1994, their son, Rich, built them a home on the golf course in Glenns Ferry, where they lived out the rest of their loving marriage until Gordon’s death in 2009.

Betty was an active member of the community and participated in the Order of the Eastern Star # 60 and PEO Chapter Z in Glenns Ferry. Betty and Gordon loved golfing. After Gordon passed, Betty continued playing golf with the ladies' league at Carmella Winery in Glenns Ferry.

Betty is survived by her three children, Connie Stilson (Pat) of Cambria, California, Richard Brown (Kari) of Glenns Ferry, Idaho, and Susan Brown of Glenns Ferry, Idaho, and a sister, Donna Lawson (Jerry) of Henderson, Nevada. She has 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, both parents, two stepmothers, her twin brother, Bill Varin (Alma) of Gooding, Idaho, and sister, Jeanne Powell (Howard) of Wendell, Idaho.

The family would like to thank Dr. John Gies, Hospice Visions LLC., and our hospice Nurse Eva for the love and care they provided.

In Lieu of Flowers, it was Betty's wishes to have donations made to PEO Chapter Z High School Scholarship Fund.
