Margaret Root

Obituary of Margaret Root

Margaret (Peg) Allen Root, born October 2,1954 in Denver, Colorado, to William Weldon Allen and Mary Antoinette Allen, passed away on November 3, 2023.

Peg met her future husband, Douglas Howard Root, during her freshman year of college at the University of Northern Colorado. Both were studying to become teachers, and she graduated in 1976. One of her favorite memories from college was their time as Square Dancers. Doug had introduced her to it and she was hooked! They sometimes Square Danced three times a week! They continued dancing throughout the years.

On June 7,1975 they began their 48+ year marriage in Colorado. They both always said “I married my best friend”…and they did.

Peg and Doug moved to Mountain Home, Idaho in 1977. She taught Special Education at East Elementary from 1977-1981, at West Elementary from 1987-1992. In 1986-1987 she taught Special Education in the Boise School District. From 1993 through her retirement in 2011 she worked as a Developmental Specialist for the Infant-Toddler Program with the Department of Health and Welfare Developmental Disabilities for the state of Idaho.

Peg loved to travel, and they visited so many places together. Yellowstone, the Oregon coast, Mesa Verde, Crater Lake and a cruise to Alaska for their 40th wedding anniversary were some of her favorite destinations . Most summers when their children Brian, Danielle and Jason were young the family would be out camping and fishing all over Idaho. She loved to fish, sit by a campfire and watch the stars.

After her retirement she began a new career as an independent representative for a whole food company. She loved the products and the message but most importantly, she LOVED the people she met, whether or not they became a customer. It also gave her an opportunity to see so much of the USA that she may not have otherwise seen.

She had been to Australia multiple times with Doug as he coached for Down Under Sports. She had visited England, Rome, Austria and many other places with her High School choir.

Her love of singing and music followed her her entire life. If you were around her you knew she had a song for everything! Just throw out a name, item or phrase and it never failed, she would start singing within seconds - always with a smile on her face.

Peg is preceded in death by her, parents, William and Mary Allen.

She is survived by her children Brian Root of Omaha, NE, Danielle (Dani) Root of Peoria, AZ and Jason Root of Mountain Home, ID. Grandchildren: David, Alanna, Alexi, Ashlyn, Gillian and Liam. Siblings: Steve Allen, Bill Allen, David Allen all of the Denver, Colorado area and sister Linda Thomas of Mountain Home, Idaho.

In leu of flowers Peg and Doug have asked that a donation in Pegs name be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Washington. They are currently working on a cure for liver cancer.

Not being one to follow convention she had a FUNeral in August, which brought her great joy! She was able to see so many of her dearest friends, give and receive so many hugs, smiles and say her goodbyes. No further services are scheduled at this time.
