Dorothy Powell

Obituary of Dorothy M. Powell

Dorothy Powell, 97, of Mountain Home, Idaho went to be with the Lord on June 14, 2023.

Dorothy was born to Ora and Bertha Engelman on December 2, 1925, in Buhl, Idaho. She had two sisters, June and Ann, and a brother, Joe.

Dorothy was raised at Prairie, Idaho. She loved Prairie and all her family and friends there. Her dad was the mail carrier and her mother taught school. When she was in 7th grade and June in 8th, they moved to Mountain Home for the remainder of their education. She graduated from Mountain Home High School in 1943. The night she graduated from high school she received a marriage proposal from Lyle Powell, and she said “yes”!

Dorothy and Lyle married on January 25, 1944. During their 66 years together they ran the Prairie Store, worked at the sawmill (where Dorothy worked on the “green Chain”). If you know anything about that you know she was one tough lady!

When the sawmill closed in the winter, they moved to Boise. Their son, Leland was born there February 28, 1947. Lyle's work took them back to Prairie and then to Anderson Dam. At this time Dorothy was pregnant with their daughter Karen who was born in Boise on December 26, 1949.

After losing their home at Prairie to a devastating fire, they moved to Mountain Home. Dorothy took care of their children, belonged to Royal Neighbors of America, volunteered with the hospital auxiliary, belonged to E.S.A. Sorority and headed district electric board for over 40 years.

Dorothy was a multi-talented person! She baked and decorated wedding cakes for many years. She made her sister Ann’s wedding dress (Which was also worn by Leland’s wife Nancy, and Ann’s daughter Sherri Karren.)

Lyle’s next job took them to Alaska where he worked on the pipeline and they explored, made friends, fished and found beach treasures.

Dorothy and Lyle attended approximately 40 National Old Time Fiddler contests in Weiser, Idaho where Lyle accompanied others on his guitar. They had many good friends there.

These relationships with the “Old Time Fiddlers” led them to Arizona where they followed the contests in the winter and had a great time!

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Lyle Powell, her brother Joe Engelman, and her two sisters, June Acarregui and Ann Knudson.

She is survived by her children Leland Powell (Nancy) and Karen Powell. Two grandchildren, Deron Powell (Mayme) and Darbi Robinson (Robby). Also missing her are 6 great grandchildren, Matt Powell (Pearl), Isaac Dursteler, Mason Powell, Hayden Dursteler, Isaac Knuteson, and Lily Knuteson. She was also blessed to see her first great, great grandson Leland Deron Powell. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Greg Knudson, niece Sherri Karren (Rob) and her nephew Jeff Knudson (Gina).

We, her family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Ashley Manor for their love, care and support of Dorothy and of us.
