Obituary of Cheryl Renee Hamman

Cheryl Renee Hamman was born on February 7, 1963, to James and Lyn Piper. Cheryl passed away on her 59th birthday, February 7, 2022.

As a young child, Cheryl moved often and far with her Air Force family, living in many different US states, as well as Izmir, Turkey. Eventually the family settled in Mountain Home, allowing summers and holidays spent in the home of her beloved grandparents in Hermiston, Oregon with siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Cheryl was raised in a time when people understood that richness had nothing to do with wealth, and everything to do with family. Cheryl’s family loved and cherished her for her incredible intelligence, and her love and zest for life.

Being born legally blind, Cheryl smashed every obstacle that stood in the way. Very early in her teens, it became clear that Cheryl had an incredible wit and way with people, most especially children. People were drawn to her, even as a young person, because of her genuine heart. Cheryl made many friendships over the years, and always acted as a peacekeeper and advisor, because she was so trusted and valued by those that knew her.

Cheryl married Ken Hamman in April, 1985, and in 1991 they welcomed son Scott Hamman, divorcing some years later.

Cheryl soon found herself a young single mother, and this was where she came to understand her incredible power. Her gift of connection with children was literal magic to behold. What began with her son became her life’s work, and not only did she raise him to be an amazing man, but helped raise many other local children, through her family, work, and out of love. Instead of relying on others, she helped build a successful daycare business, and purchased a home, all without being able to see to drive a car. If you have raised children in Mountain Home in the last 20 years, you count yourself a fortunate parent if she cared for your kids at Little Sprouts Daycare. Cheryl ended her career working as a bookkeeper at The Sunset Bar, where friends became family.

Specializing in childcare led Cheryl smoothly into being the most adoring grandmother to her cherished grandsons, when her son Scott and his wife Casey had Pearse and Preston Hamman. Scott and his family are her legacy, and proof that she understood the assignment. Her boys loved and cherished their time with her, as did all her extended family. Her grandsons will continue to learn about love and life through her, by the way she raised her son, and by the positive impact she had on those that knew and loved her. Friends are encouraged to join the family for a Celebration of Life on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 1:00 pm, at the Mountain Home Idaho Elks Lodge.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her father James Piper, much loved grandparents Joseph and Erna Gettmann, beloved brother Brian Piper, and niece Shawna Lee Piper. Cheryl is survived by her cherished son Scott Hamman (Casey) and grandsons Pearse and Preston Hamman of Mountain Home, her mother Lyn Piper (Craig Gross) of Boise, brother Greg Piper (Beth) of Pendleton, Oregon, sister Lorie Clark (Cory) of Milton, Florida, brother Scott Feeney (Suzanne) of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, sister in-law Kathy Piper, of Hermiston, Oregon, sister Michelle Piper, Mountain Home, sister Jeanne Piper-Heller, Canon City, Colorado, and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved with all her heart.

Cremation was under the care of Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel.
