My name is Ann McBride and I was in the same PE class at PG High as Gary and I have a small story to tell that made me feel good. I think we were juniors at the time, and teams were being selected to play some game against each other - not sure if it was softball, volleyball, or some other co-ed game. Gary was chosen as one of the team captains to pick their team. Of course, all the boys are chosen first, each captain taking turns making their choice one-by-one, based on their athletic ability. Then the girls are chosen, based on how pretty or popular they are. I could never understand that, because some of the prettiest girls were the worst athletes. I was not especially pretty then and certainly not popular, but I was the most athletic of the bunch of girls in the class, by far. However, I was almost always picked last, which always struck me as unfair and dumb. But guess what? Gary picked me as the first girl picked! And it made me feel so good! It was because he wanted to win and to win he needed the best athletes on his team. In building his team, he didn't care about how pretty or popular you were, only about how you could successfully contribute to his team. To this day, I remember this incident and looking up to Gary as a good and fair athletic leader.

Gary was a big brother to me. My brother Brian and Gary were best friends in high school. It was a dream to be a freshman and to have my two brothers there to protect me. Gary was the most gifted natural athlete I have ever seen in high school. Let me share this memory:
Gary never lifted weights consistently. He did some weightlifting but never really weight trained. I was a frosh in the old weightroom at PG high which is now the main gym concession area. It was a crappy little weight room with a Universal machine, a squat rack and a bench press. The room had about 365 lbs of free weight plates. I remember being in that room and Gary walks in and says, “put all the weight on the bar on the squat rack.“ We helped him put the weight on. He takes a few breaths, turns to us and says, “I’m going to squat this my jersey number....”. His number was 32!! No warm up.... got under the weight, took it off the rack and I watched him squat it 32 X!! One of the most amazing feats of strength I have seen in person to this day! Racked it up when he was done, looked at me, smiled and said,”I’m a bad mofo huh Pat?” I responded, “Hell ya Gary! Your an animal!” He smiled and walked out.
Hard to believe he is gone. I thought the guy was Superman....thanks for loving me like a brother in my younger years Gary. Knowing you had my back made me feel safe and protected. I never got to say that to you in person. I will miss you my friend.

I second Pat’s comments: Gary was an incredible athlete and great friend. In wrestling he was a beast. His raw strength was a sight to behold as he would man handle his opponents. On the football field he was really fast, but he would rather run over and through defenders than put a move on them. They would crumble when he lowered his pads and bulled through.
At the end of the day though, Gary was a gentle giant. He was a great friend and teammate. So sorry to have heard of his passing! RIP...
